House Guests

Little Karma played host to a house guest for several days. Karma shared her home with Cricket, a little shih tzu, while Crickets' mom was away on vacation. When Karma was first rescued she lived with several dogs and cats. She got along very well with them. However, they were all much larger than here. We are talking about Newfoundlands and shepherd mixes. Cricket is much smaller than a Newfoundland.

To be honest I was a little nervous about how the two little dogs would get along. Karma has such a strong personality and is always in play mode. Cricket is older and not so much in to playtime. I figured the two would be fine together, after all they are both little and will need the same basic care: walks, feeding, and nightly snuggles.

What I did not count on when I agreed to watch Cricket was Nic being away from home for the weekend. For several days it would just be Karma, Cricket, and me.

Karma was very excited to meet Cricket. Cricket could have cared less about Karma. This, of course, only made Karma more interested in her. After a few hours of Karma begging to play she got the message that Cricket was not interested. Though, every so often Karma would feel the need to try to convince Cricket to play with her.

While there two never did become best friends they did tolerate each other quite well. They both slept in the bed, not next to each other, but they didn't care that they were near. They would sit next to each other on the couch, never touching of course. They went on walks quite harmoniously. Karma even showed Cricket that the opened back stairs were not something to be afraid of.

Poor Karma was very jealous of Cricket. Little Cricket was very eager to get affection since her family was away. Cricket became very possessive of me, which was a little frustrating because she would not let Karma near me. When Nic came back home there were two people to provide attention to the little pups. The two dogs learned that the other meant no harm and they would go about their business throughout the day.

I learned something very valuable during Cricket's stay. Karma will get along fine with another dog her size. Which is fantastic because one day I would live to get another Boston terrier. Hopefully, there will be a little less jealously between the two. Maybe if the energy levels are more evenly matched the two dogs will play together instead of fighting for affection from their humans.

One thing is defiantly for sure, Cricket is welcome back to spend time with Karma and her family anytime.
